CITY OF RUSSELL

WATER DEPARTMENT

The City of Russell water department is comprised of two divisions; Water Production and Water Distribution.

WATER DISTRIBUTION

The Water Distribution Superintendent is Mark Hamel he may be reached at 785-483-6311.  The Distribution division is responsible for all distribution water mains in the City.  This division maintains water mains, installs new water mains, does maintenance work on all related distribution and water production facilities.

The Water Distribution Division is also responsible for maintaining the waste water collection system.

WATER PRODUCTION

The Water Production Superintendent is Doug Langhofer, he may be reached at 785-483-6311.  The Water Production Division is responsible for the production of raw water and treating the raw water to safe drinking water standards.

The City of Russell has two raw water sources.  Nine wells are located adjacent to the Smoky Hill Riverapproximately twenty three miles southwest of the City.  A surface water intake is located about 8 miles southwest of the City along Big Creek.

The City of Russell currently uses conventional lime softening process to treat raw water.  Construction is under way on an Electro-Dialysis Reversal (EDR) Water Treatment Plant.  The EDR plant uses membrane technology to treat water and will supplement the treatment now being provided by the existing water treatment plant.  When the EDR plant comes on line in early 2008, the total water treatment capacity for the City of Russell will be about 3 million gallons per day.
