W. Wichita Avenue Project Update
Continuing the City’s multi-year plan to improve our roadways the mill and overlay project on W. Wichita Avenue began on Monday, August 21, 2023. The project began with replacing the curb and gutter, milling the roadway surface, and replacing numerous concrete base sections.
With those tasks complete, the contractor will begin the asphalt overlay on Monday, October 16, 2023. The overlay process is expected to take five days. During this time, cross streets along Wichita Avenue from Fossil Street to VanHouten will be closed temporarily while the contract is working at those intersections. Following the work at the intersections, the contract will work on the inside and outside lanes, concluding with the striping of the one-mile project.
While east and west-bound traffic will be allowed during this work, expect delays. To avoid delays and improve work zone safety, motorists are asked to avoid the area from October 16 – 20, 2023.
The project should be completed by the end of the day on October 20, 2023, weather permitting.
The City of Russell received a $360,600 Community Development Block Grant and a $36,030 Dane G. Hansen Grant to cover part of the $824,050 project cost.
APAC of Hays, KS, is the primary contractor.
