The City of Russell is introducing a Youth Council!
This Youth Council will consist of 1-2 highschoolers from the community to attend city council meetings, give their input on current issues, and to raise youth issues to the council.
The goals of the program is to encourage civic engagement in our youth, for the youth and city leaders to develop a relationship, to provide an opportunity for the City Council to obtain youth perspective on a broad range of issues within the community, and to develop future civic leaders of the City of Russell.
The duties of a member of the Youth Council are to take youth concerns and bring them to City Council for consideration, Advise City Council based off of youth concerns, report back to the youth of Russell Jr.-Sr. Highschool any information from City Council meetings, Review Council Packet as published in preparation for City Council meetings.
The activities of the Youth Council are attending City Council meetings to observe and advise the Council, Present to the Youth of Russell Jr.-Sr. Highschool at least once a month, Collaborate with other youth groups in Russell Jr.-Sr. Highschool, and help coordinate a local government day for JAG-K.
The requirements to be a member are:
- Attend Russell Jr.-Sr. High and be 15-18 years old
- Maintain at least a 2.25 GPA
- Attend at least one City Council meeting a month
- Treat one's peers with respect, kindness, and compassion
- Be an active member of the JAG-K program
- Be active for the whole term (Jan.-May)
Members of the Youth Council will be selected through an interview process after applying. Applications are currently closed for this year. Members of the Youth Council may also be able to do an apprenticeship with the City of Russell.
